The Project

While visiting the Guédelon building site near Saint-Sauveur in Burgundy, France, one not only experiences one of the world’s most unusual construction sites, one also becomes a “time-traveler” catapulted back into the middle ages. A medieval castle is being built in the forest of Saint-Sauveur. What makes this site unique? This construction is under way using 700-year-old techniques. It’s all about craftsmanship. No bulldozers, no trucks, not even electric drills. A very impressive scenario; 47 people in historical clothing working on a gargantuan project, slated for completion in 2025.

Guédelon is both a construction site and an open-air museum. The roughly 200,000 visitors each year finance the project with their entrance fees. With the exception of the 47 employees, who are all paid union rates, the association has practically no further costs because the building materials are all found and processed on the premises. In the beginning, people laughed about the project, but in the meantime, Guédelon has the overwhelming support of leading French historians, art historians and architects as a long-term scientific experiment. Guédelon is more than just another a Living-History-Project, because everybody is a professional. The castle is reality!

»Let's construct a Knight's Castle« gets a Honorary Mention at the 8th International Archeology Film-Art-Festival Kiel

Reinhard Kungels »Let's construct a Knight's Castle« succeeded in getting a Honorary Mention at the 8th International Archeologiy Film-Art-Festival Kiel in April.
